From around the 13th to the 15th of April Thailand celebrates the traditional new year with one huge, country-wide water fight. Originally people sprinkled water over Buddha images or their elders, symbolising the past being washed away. Now however the custom has morphed into people of all ages dowsing each other with a lot more than a trickle.
Buckets, water pistols and even hoses are used for the soaking and no one is complaining, this time of year is sweltering in Thailand and the cool water offers a welcome rest from the heat.
Celebrations take place all over the country, with those in Chiang Mai among the biggest and craziest and drawing plenty of foreigners wishing to join the party. Wherever you find yourself you are likely to get water poured on you in some form, so remember not to wear your best designer gear or plaster your face in makeup!
