Meet Yoli Mayor.
She’s a 21-year-old singer who auditioned on the popular NBC TV show, America’s Got Talent.
Growing up, she spent a lot of time at her parents’ repair shop. And when a customer came into the shop that her parents really liked, they asked her to sing.
“I don’t know who I would be without singing,” she added. She’s been doing it since she was 9 years old.
Yoli says she remembers feeling like the “fat friend” and she’s struggled her whole life with being a little bigger.
Her weight, she explains, started to be dream-crushing because she thought she had to change who she was in order to be successful.
At some point she realized: “life without singing would be absolutely devastating.”
As she began to take her singing more seriously she decided to audition for America’s Got Talent.
Yoli walked confidently on stage and gave the usual introductions with the judges. Heidi even said she had a feeling “she’s gonna be amazing.”
But just a few seconds into her performance of Annie Lennox’s “I Put a Spell On You,” Simon Cowell stopped the music.
The audience, other judges, and Yoli were all shocked.
“This isn’t working for me,” Simon explained.
Yoli stood on the stage, alone and in disbelief. Simon said her look and her song was too old-fashioned.
