This is why you shouldn’t take a selfie next to a very large crocodile

When you encounter incredible wildlife, it can be tempting to take a photo as daring as possible to record the moment, but as we know all too well, the craze for extreme selfies can often lead to disaster.

A French traveller is now recovering in a Thai hospital after being attacked by a crocodile she was trying to pose next to. She and her husband were visiting Khao Yai National Park, which is rich in wildlife, and spotted a huge male crocodile basking in the sun next to a pond. They crouched down carefully to take a photo but the 46-year-old tripped, which startled the croc, causing it to clamp it jaws down onto her leg.

Photos show her being pulled from the water and taken away on a stretcher. There are signs in the park that warn visitors to not leave the path, but obviously the temptation was too much and she ended up with a much closer encounter than anticipated. Luckily, it seems she will make a full recovery.

Khao Yai was the first national park in Thailand, and covers more than 2,000 square kilometers of grassland and forest in the centre of the country. Other animals often spotted in the park include gibbons, elephants, bears and hornbills.
