Talk about bad timing. In this video mountain biker Evan van de Spuy is riding along an African trail when out of the nowhere a red hartebeest (one of the largest antelope species) crosses the same path and takes him straight off his bike.
While it’s unclear if the antelope was aiming to take out the biker or fleeing some other threat (in which case it was seriously unlucky timing), it was obviously startled as I’m sure the biker was also.
The incident happened to Evan, who rides for Team Jeep South Africa, during the Time Freight Express MTB race at Albert Falls Dam in South Africa. The amazingly rare footage was captured by team mate Travis Walker on his GoPro.
Fortunately, the biker came out of it shaken, but unharmed. Later in the video a picture of his smashed-up helmet can be seen, another reminder to always use safety gear. Had he not been wearing the helmet, the outcome would have most likely been different. The antelope was also unhurt and is seen galloping off into the distance after the crash.
