The giant high heeled shoe that now graces the landscape in Budai, Taiwan is actually a newly built church. Made out of 320 blue tinted glass panels it stands at 55 ft high and 36 ft wide, surely making it a contender for the biggest shoe in the world.
Local government officials gave the go ahead last June for the US $686,000 project and it opened its doors on the 8th of February, just in time for Chinese New Year. Located on the waterfront and in a national scenic area, the shoe has already become something of a local tourist attraction.
So the reason behind building a big glass slipper? To attract more women of course. According to one of the managers the church will not be used for normal services, but as an original and romantic spot for wedding shoots and ceremonies.
There’s also more to the design than meets the eye. The shoe honors the memory of a local impoverished girl who lost both her legs to blackfoot disease in the 1960s. After this happened her wedding was cancelled and she spent the rest of her life at a church. According to a spokesman there are also 100 female orientated features, such as maple leaves, chairs for lovers, biscuits and cakes.
It’s most definitely tailored to women but, unsurprisingly, the women themselves have been showing mixed reactions.
