Filmmaker captures a smiling lava face in a Hawaiian volcano crater

While flying over the Pu’u O’o crater volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, filmmaker Mick Kalber was treated to an extraordinary aerial view of a smiling lava face.

The 1,000 °C molten lava had broken through the surface creating eyes and a beaming (albeit crooked) smile. Kalber, who is no stranger to the islands volcanos, was filming the event because it was the first time in many years the volcano has created a new lava route to the ocean.

Many enthusiasts showed up to watch the red hot lava trickle down into the ocean, hissing and steaming as the waves lap over the flow.
