8 of the tastiest cheap eats in Glasgow – Yettio

Glasgow’s gastronomic delights have earned a healthy respect over the years, with the food scene here rivalling many other cities in the UK. From fish suppers and mac and cheese, to posh brunches and Indian tapas, the city has it all. They’ve even won the title of ‘Curry Capital’ of Britain on numerous occasions.

If you’re in need of delicious food but don’t have much money, you’ve come to the right place. In fact, there seems to be a surplus of excellent cheap eats in Glasgow, so much so it was pretty tricky narrowing down some of the best for this list.

It’s as difficult to avoid good music as it is cheap food in Glasgow, and in this independent bar you can have both. They offer daily specials starting from only £3 for mac and cheese and £5 for steaks, plus they have an excellent range of beers and free concerts in the evening.

Ranjit’s Kitchen

This family run deli in Pollockshields serves up homemade Punjabi dishes and snacks for less than £5, such as samosa channa and paneer rolls. The casual restaurant was a lifelong dream of Ranjit herself, and the curries are some of the most authentic in Glasgow.

This vibrant neighbourhood cantina offers traditional Mexican cooking and tempting lunchtime and pre-theatre specials. At lunch there are choice of fajitas for just £4.50 or £6.95 with a hearty bowl of soup included. The atmosphere is cosy and energetic and if it’s raining outside there are a range of speciality tequilas to warm you up.

The Horseshoe

This pub is a Glasgow institution, with intact Victorian interiors and one of the longest bars in Europe. They also offer good food for tiny prices, such as an express weekday lunch for £4 and plenty of all-day meals for under £6. If you’re here in the evening you can join in with the most famous karaoke in the city too.

University Cafe

Run by the same family since 1918, this humble establishment is part Italian cafe, part greasy spoon / chip shop and part ice cream parlour. There’s everything you need to get your fix of fried food and sugar, and most of the classic meals are less than £5.

Bier Halle

This large underground beer hall stocks more than 100 varieties of the stuff, so there’s plenty of choice in that department, including traditional 2 litre jugs. To soak up all that liquid they also offer great meal deals, including soup and a salad for £6.50, 2-4-1 pizzas and a free bratwurst with every stein.

Strangebrew Cafe

This new addition to the Shawlands area has gained a loyal following for their delicious brunches. The best of these involve eggs cooked in a variety of inventive ways for less than £6, including the famous ‘That Guy’. They also have eggless vegan options and it’s dog friendly.

Bella Vita

This cosy Italian restaurant is known for it’s friendly atmosphere and delicious Neapolitan cuisine. Visiting any time of the day or night is pretty good value, as there always seems to be some special offer, although the lunch time choice of 2 courses for £7.50 is particularly great.
