We are passing through the summer festival ticket buying season and many will be left empty handed. But don’t fear if you are low on cash this year or don’t have lightening fast purchasing skills, there are hundreds of music events that don’t cost a penny.
Here are just 7 of the most famous…
Hardly Strictly Bluegrass
San Francisco, USA
2016 dates: Sep 30th – Oct 2nd
What started as a bluegrass festival in 2001 has turned into a monster of a free festival. Taking place in Golden Gate Park during the first weekend of October, HSB is entirely non-commercial and attracts upwards of 750,000 people over the weekend. Nowadays, you can hear a lot more than bluegrass at the festival. A lot of the big names in the country, rock and blues scene perform here.
Kostrzyn nad Odrą, Poland
2016 dates: Jul 14th – Jul 15th
Polish Woodstock is a huge festival organised annually by the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity Foundation. The music is an eclectic mix of everything, from a small obscure Polish band to the Prodigy or Anthrax. The organisers are working hard to make this a friendly festival for its size.
Danube Island Festival

Another one fighting for the title of Europe’s largest open air festival. Vienna’s leafy Danube island becomes the site of three days of music and other media madness for all ages. There is also loads of tempting food on offer.
2016 dates: Aug 5th -Aug 14th
Spanning a hardcore 10 days, this is the United States largest free non-gated music festival. With over 15 stages and 500 performers it is also the perfect place to discover new bands and musicians.

The Big Weekend is a spin off ‘One Big Sunday’ which in turn was the successor of ‘The Radio 1 Roadshow’ which travelled the country every summer from 1973 until the 1990s.
Gnaoua World music festival
2016 dates: May 12th – May 15th
Promoting openness and tolerance, this festival establishes a platform for exchange between traditional Gnaoua musicians and foreign artists. The Hague, Netherlands
Still going since 1981, this one day festival draws some big names to the stage as well as around 350,000 fans who come for a serious frolick in the park.
